In an Alexander Technique Lesson the student is initially assisted by the teacher in basic movements like sitting, standing and walking. This is to help the student to detect any habits that may be restricting his or her movement. The teacher helps the student to kinesthetically experience the freedom of movement that can occur when the head, neck and torso are in the relationship that facilitates ease of movement.

The teacher uses touch as a stimulus to help the student respond to moving in a new easier manner. The student is engaged in the process so he or she can contrast the experience of their usual manner of movement to the new and more free option of movement. After a lesson, must students say that they feel a sense of lightness and ease.

The student is given tools in the form of directions that he/she may start to practice and apply to movement in his/her every day life.
